Year 4 Maths

Maths is a core subject, and the National Curriculum sets out in some detail what must be taught. Maths takes up a substantial part of your child’s learning week.

Obviously, it would be impossible to set out in detail everything your child will learn during their time in Year 4, but by providing an outline of typical content and some background information about how the maths curriculum and assessment works, hopefully it will help you support your children in making the most of their time in Year 4.

White Rose Maths

At NCJPS we follow the White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning.

The progression of skills documents from the NCETM and our Calculation Policies are also used to guide staff to know prior learning of the children and the next steps. This informs teachers' planning accordingly.

By the end of Year 4, children will be expected to know all of their times tables up to 12 x 12 by heart. This means not only recalling them in order but also being able to answer any times table question at random, and also knowing the related division facts. For example, in knowing that 6 x 8 = 48, children can also know the related facts that 8 x 6 = 48 and that 48 ÷ 6 = 8 and 48 ÷ 8 = 6. This expertise will be particularly useful when solving larger problems and working with fractions.

We have designed our maths curriculum so our children will be able to:

  • demonstrate quick recall of facts and procedures (this includes the recollection of the times tables)

  • demonstrate flexibility and fluidity to move between different contexts and representations of mathematics

  • show ability to recognise relationships and make connections in mathematics

  • show confidence in believing that they will achieve

  • show a high level of pride in the presentation and understanding of the work

  • utilise opportunities outside the classroom including home learning to enrich experience

  • develop enquiry skills to pursue their own interests within a topic and further questioning

  • become increasingly critical and analytical within their thinking

  • retain prior-learning and explicitly make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learning

  • learn without limits, making cross-curricular links to secure application and mastery

How is learning in maths offered in Year 5?

  • Quality first teaching (including personalised learning, adaptive learning, strategies to support SEN pupils’ learning in class, purposeful practice, explicit teaching of vocabulary, ongoing formative assessment)
  • Planned and sequenced lessons, including knowledge, skills and vocabulary
  • Quality resources including: iPads, Chromebooks and online resources
  • Consider cognitive load theory and limits of working memory
  • DEAL
  • Workshops/visitors
  • Opportunity to take responsibility for own learning and work independently

Parent Tips

Tip 1. Playing traditional games, such as battleships or even draughts and chess, is great for exploring coordinates and movements across the coordinate grid. Much of the knowledge in Year 4 relies on number facts being easily recalled too.  Any practice at home to keep these skills sharp will certainly be appreciated by your child’s class teacher.

Tip 3. White Rose Maths offers some great home learning sessions which can be easily accessed and complement the White Rose Education premium resources which your child enjoys at NCJPS. Home learning videos are available for every single small step. They are fun, practical and easy to use. Each learning block has a set of questions for your child to solve. The videos will show you clearly and simply how to help your child complete the linked activities successfully.
