Year 3 Maths

Maths is a core subject, and the National Curriculum sets out in some detail what must be taught. Maths takes up a substantial part of your child’s learning week.

Obviously, it would be impossible to set out in detail everything your child will learn during their time in Year 3, but by providing an outline of typical content and some background information about how the maths curriculum and assessment works, hopefully it will help you support your children in making the most of their time in Year 3.

White Rose Maths

At NCJPS we follow the White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning.

The progression of skills documents from the NCETM and our Calculation Policies are also used to guide staff to know prior learning of the children and the next steps. This informs teachers' planning accordingly.

During the years of lower Key Stage 2 (Year 3 and Year 4), the focus of mathematics is on the mastery of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) so that children can carry out calculations mentally, and using written methods.

We have designed our maths curriculum so our children will be able to:

  • demonstrate quick recall of facts and procedures (this includes the recollection of the times tables)

  • demonstrate flexibility and fluidity to move between different contexts and representations of mathematics

  • show ability to recognise relationships and make connections in mathematics

  • show confidence in believing that they will achieve

  • show a high level of pride in the presentation and understanding of the work

  • utilise opportunities outside the classroom including home learning to enrich experience

  • develop enquiry skills to pursue their own interests within a topic and further questioning

  • become increasingly critical and analytical within their thinking

  • retain prior-learning and explicitly make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learning

  • learn without limits, making cross-curricular links to secure application and mastery

How is learning in maths offered in Year 3?

  • Quality first teaching (including personalised learning, adaptive learning, strategies to support SEN pupils’ learning in class, purposeful practice, explicit teaching of vocabulary, ongoing formative assessment)
  • Planned and sequenced lessons, including knowledge, skills and vocabulary
  • Quality resources including: iPads, Chromebooks and online resources
  • Consider cognitive load theory and limits of working memory
  • DEAL
  • Workshops/visitors
  • Opportunity to take responsibility for own learning and work independently

Parent Tips

Tip 1. NCJPS has a calculation policy which sets out the order in which calculation strategies are taught. We use it to show what methods are used in school and when they are usually introduced.  Any practice at home to keep these skills sharp will certainly be appreciated by your child’s class teacher.

Tip 3. White Rose Maths offers some great home learning sessions which can be easily accessed and complement the White Rose Education premium resources which your child enjoys at NCJPS. Home learning videos are available for every single small step. They are fun, practical and easy to use. Each learning block has a set of questions for your child to solve. The videos will show you clearly and simply how to help your child complete the linked activities successfully.
